The Atlas mountains are the backbone of Moroccan paragliding. High ridges, deep valleys and clear air give long views and rewarding flights.
Mountain flying is different from coastal flying, and it helps to know why.
Why the Atlas
The Atlas combines altitude, relief and many sunny days. The landscape changes from green valleys to stony slopes, with snow on the highest peaks in winter and spring.
For visitors, it also means short travel from Marrakech.
Mountain versus coast
In the mountains, sun-heated slopes create thermals and air can be more active, especially in the middle of the day. On the coast, steadier sea breezes are the main feature.
Mountain flights are often best early or late in the day, when the air is calmer.
Preparing for altitude
It is colder at altitude, so dress in layers. Sun is stronger and the air thinner, so use sun protection and drink water. Closed shoes that grip are important for take-off.
Respecting the mountains
Mountain villages live from the land. Follow local advice, take your rubbish with you and ask before entering private land.
Weather in the mountains changes quickly. Your pilot may adjust the plan, and that is a sign of good judgement.
